Find a bed on tour, even with no signal

Say how much longer you can ride and see hotels, hostels, guest houses and campsites you can reach, with arrival times. Works offline after Get ready, and it's free.

It’s six o’clock. You meant to reach the next town tonight, but the headwind had other plans and your legs are done. You can ride maybe two more hours. Where can you actually sleep within two hours of here, on the route?

That’s the question Find a bed answers. It’s free, and after Get ready it works with no signal.

Find a bed in three taps

  1. Open the route, or if you’re riding, the ride screen. On a route page it’s Beds under On the ride, then Find a bed. On the ride, it’s in the ⋯ menu and on the beds card.
  2. Under How much longer can you ride?, pick 1 h, 2 h or 3 h, or Custom (anything up to 12 hours).
  3. Pick how far off the route you’re willing to go (Within 1, 3, 5 or 10 km) and tap Find beds.

Ridekit works out how far that time gets you from where you are, at the ride plan’s pace with climbs and breaks included, and tells you before it searches: for example, “From where you are (km 112), 2 h gets you to km 151 by about 20:10 at 22 km/h, climbs and breaks included.”

The results open with the answer first, like “4 places to stay · Around km 151”: hotels, hostels, guest houses, motels, apartments, chalets and campsites, in route order, each with its arrival time. Filter by kind if you only want a campsite, say.

Other ways to look

The same page has two more ways in, under Look for a bed by:

  • Town: pick a town ahead on the route, and Ridekit looks for beds around it. Handy when you know you want a town with a supermarket in the morning.
  • Map: tap the map where you’d like to stop.

In the results, tap a town in the list to search around it instead.

A place’s page

Tap a place for everything about it:

  • Book for tonight: Booking.com and Airbnb open a search for tonight around this place. Not every place is listed there, so you may see others nearby instead, or none.
  • Contact: Call, Website and Email, when OpenStreetMap has them.
  • About: address, opening hours, where it is on the route, how far off it, and Arrive about with the time.
  • Getting there: Directions in Maps or Directions in Google Maps, and Look Around.

Places come from OpenStreetMap, which knows where they are but not which rooms are free. Call ahead when you can.

On a Garmin Edge: ride to the door

Once you’ve picked a place, a Garmin Edge can take you to its door. Tap Directions in Maps, then in Apple Maps tap Share → Garmin Connect → Send to Device. The Edge gets it as a destination, alongside the course you’re riding.

With no signal

Get ready for offline, tapped on the route page while you had internet, saves places to stay along the whole route, up to 5 km off it. With no signal, Find a bed searches those instead and says so: “No internet: from the places to stay saved on this iPhone”. You still get the list, the arrival times, phone numbers and directions in Maps.

Booking.com, Airbnb and websites need a connection.

See riding abroad without roaming for what else to get ready before a trip.

Beds on the ride screen

When you’re riding (tap Start riding on a route), the ride screen has a beds card: the nearest places to stay ahead, from your last Find a bed or the list Get ready saved. And the route page’s Beds row keeps your last search, so you can come back to it after dinner.

Towns, also under On the ride, lists places of 500 people or more near the route with their size. A village may have one bar with short hours; a town has a supermarket and likely a bike shop. It helps decide where to stop for the night. It’s built into the app, so it works offline too.

Good to know

  • Find a bed and Beds are free, on every plan.
  • The pace comes from the route’s ride plan. If you’ve set one for the weather, the arrival times use your speed and breaks.
  • Riding stage by stage? Ridekit offers the next stage near the end of today’s. See a multi-day tour, stage by stage.
  • Places to stay also show in Stops along the way, with Pro or Plus, alongside water and food.
