A multi-day tour, stage by stage
Keep a tour's routes together as stages, split one long route into days at good stops, and put each day's course on your bike computer as you go.
Seven days, seven routes, and the planner gave you one 640 km file, or seven files named “Route (3)”. On the morning of day four, in a guest house with weak Wi-Fi, you want the right one on your bike computer, and you want tomorrow’s ready too.
Ridekit keeps a tour together as a collection of stages, in order, and helps you ride them one after another.
Put the tour in a collection
A collection is a folder for a trip or an event, with its routes in stage order. Collections come with Pro or Plus.
- On the home page, tap + and then New collection…. Give it a name.
- To move routes in: tap Select on the home page, pick the routes, and tap Move (the folder button).
- In the collection, open the ⋯ menu and tap Reorder stages to put them in riding order.
The collection page shows all the stages on one map, numbered, with each stage’s distance. Swipe left on a stage, or touch and hold it, to take it out of the collection: it goes back to the library, nothing is deleted.
Or split one long route into stages
Got the whole tour as one file? Open it and tap Split into stages under Tools (Pro or Plus). Choose how to cut it:
- Equal: parts of the same length.
- Effort: climbing counts too (1000 m up is about 10 km of flat), so hilly days are shorter.
- Stops: each cut moves to the best place to stop nearby, like a café, a shop or a fuel station, else water or a toilet. It uses the route’s stops, so find them first.
- Controls: a cut at each control point in the route file, for organised rides.
- On map: tap the route on a big map to cut it there. Works offline too.
Set the number of parts, then nudge any cut with ‹ › to the previous or next good place to stop. Each part shows its km, distance and climbing. Tap Create collection of 7 parts (or however many) and Ridekit makes a new collection named after the route.
Overlap 300 m is on by default: each part starts a little before the previous one ends. When you load the next course at the stop, you’re already on it, so a Garmin Edge finds it straight away and carries on from where you are, instead of first sending you to its start.
The original route is kept as it was. The stops you found come along: each stage gets the ones on its stretch, with km counted from its own start. In Settings → Splitting you set the length Ridekit suggests per part.
Get the whole tour ready
On the collection page, tap Get ready while you have internet. Every stage gets its offline map, its stops and its places to stay, so the whole trip works without signal. See riding abroad without roaming.
On the free plan, offline maps cover routes up to 170 km and up to 500 km of new maps in any 7 days, so a week’s tour prepared at once asks for Pro or Plus. Collections and splitting need Pro or Plus anyway.
Put the stages on your bike computer
Garmin Edge: Send all… on the collection page sends every stage at once, with their stops as course points. Or send just today’s and tomorrow’s from each stage’s page. The Edge keeps at most 100 courses, so on a long tour sending as you go keeps it tidy. Sending needs no internet, so the guest house’s Wi-Fi doesn’t matter.
Wahoo, Hammerhead, Bryton and others: export a stage from its page with Export for your bike computer… (a FIT course or a GPX with stops) and open it in your bike computer’s app. For the whole tour at once, Share as zip (GPX with stops) in the collection’s ⋯ menu gives you every stage in order.
Ride it: Start riding, then the next stage
- Open today’s stage and tap Start riding. Ridekit opens straight on the ride: the map with where you are, what’s done and left, the stops, beds and towns ahead, and the elevation still to come.
- Library takes you back to your routes; a bar at the bottom leads back to the ride.
- Near the end of the stage (the last 20 km, or the last tenth of a shorter one), an Up next card shows the next stage of the collection, with Start riding. Put it on your bike computer with Send to bike computer in the ⋯ menu.
- When you tap Finish ride, Ridekit shows how far you got, and under Or finish and ride next, the next stage with Start.
Not in a collection? Ridekit offers a route from your library that starts close to where this one ends instead.
If you haven’t opened the app for 12 hours, it asks whether you’re still riding. It never ends a ride by itself. Courses on your bike computer are never touched when you finish.
Weather for every day
With Plus or the Weather add-on, open the collection’s ⋯ menu and tap Plan the stages for weather…. Set each stage’s start: changing one moves the ones after it by the same amount. Speed and breaks are set once for all stages. Update weather for all stages fetches the forecast for each day, up to about 9 days ahead. More in weather along your ride.
